Can I get a free course on Universal Credit?

How Universal Credit relates to government-funded adult courses in the UK, what providers check, and what to ask your work coach.

Quick answer

Being on Universal Credit does not automatically fund every course, but it can help providers map you to certain adult skills routes when you meet the other rules for that qualification. Publicly funded FE is separate from UC personal budgets. Ask your work coach and your training provider what evidence they need.

Answer a few quick questions and we'll help match you with suitable funded course options.

Check if you're eligible for a free course

You may be able to access a government-funded course while you are on Universal Credit if you meet the funding rules for that qualification. UC itself is not usually the payment mechanism for college tuition.

If you are unemployed or on a low income, say so on the eligibility form. Eligibility can vary by provider, location, funding route and current availability.

How UC fits with funded training

Universal Credit is a benefits system. Government-funded courses are usually paid through training providers using adult skills funding. The provider must still place you in a valid funding category.

What to ask your work coach

Your Jobcentre work coach may need to agree that study fits your claimant commitment. Bring any letters about training and keep your provider updated if your circumstances change.
